Alexandrite is a rare form of chrysoberyl, with the unusual ability to change color under different types of light. Alexandrite appears very dark brown in daylight and changing to very dark purplish brownish under artificial incandescent light. The more dramatic the change in colors, the higher the price these extraordinary stones command. Most alexandrites can only be found in small sizes.
